The Client
This major branch of the U.S. Defense Department, with hundreds of thousands of users, maintains an incredibly large number of offices and worksites throughout the world, which require extensive and secure computer services and high-speed communications to be available 24/7.
The Engagement
Encode was asked to help strengthen the Tivoli Security components of this clients underlying infrastructure which originally was architected to support a single inventory tracking application. Encodes primary focus was to upgrade, configure and integrate the Tivoli security components of the infrastructure.
The enhanced infrastructure now supports multiple back office, operational, logistical procurement and research applications while adhering to the strictest security standards.
Critical Services Delivered
During this challenging engagement, Encode staff analyzed the infrastructure, assisted with the architectural design, installed, configured and integrated Tivoli security software, conducted performance and tuning services, and resolved multiple "critical" situations. All of these services were delivered while the number of applications increased from 1 to 50, servers increased from 20 to over 300 and the number of users increased from 1,000 to well over 500,000. All of this growth occurred while the system remained fully operational.

Technology Used
Software in use includes IBM Tivoli Access Manager, providing security services, allowing web-based single sign-on, and distributed web-based administration. Additionally, Broadvision Portal, and Oracle 9i application servers are used. Host servers utilize Sun Solaris or Microsoft Windows operating systems. Other IBM products, such as Tivoli Identity Manager, to automate the management of user identities, access rights and privacy policies, may be integrated in the near future.
